PEARLS OF WISDOM FROM THE PROPHET SERIES - PART 4

We have started this series as an effort to awaken and help Muslims realize that the very peers they cheer and idealize for various "wisdom filled" quotations were preceded by someone they ought to adore and love more than their own selves. Prophet Muhammad may allah exalt his mention taught us innumerable pearls of wisdom , such that even if one-quarter of it were applied today, it would transform the society into an ideal one.

Muslims should learn the blessed and wisdom filled teachings of their Prophet;  so not only would they cherish the gift Allah graced them with but also use it in daw`ah to help convey and illuminate the hearts of Non Muslims showing them the justice, the wisdom and much more which our Prophet came with. I personally believe and always say : " Let the article speak for itself" and with this in the Name of Allah i begin enlisting the Pearls of wisdom of our prophet which are not only vital for our society but also equally important for us to achieve inner peace and ultimate salvation. Bear in Mind all of this is 14 centuries old.

PEARLS OF WISDOM 26 – BE SMART AND LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES

Abu Hurairah said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“The believer should not be stung from the same hole twice.”

[Ref: Sunan Ibn Majah 3982]

PEARLS OF WISDOM 27 – MEET PEOPLE IN A DECENT OR TIDY WAY

I (Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah.)  heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: You are coming to your brethren; so tidy your mounts and tidy your dress, so that you appear distinct among people as a beauty spot (on a body). Allah does not like obscene words or conduct nor do intentional committing of obscenity.

[Ref: Sunan abi Dawood (4089), Mustadrak al-Hakim; Abu Nu`aym and elsewhere]

PEARLS OF WISDOM 28 – RESPECT THE ELDER AND SHOW MERCY TOWARDS THE YOUNG

The elderly community of any nation is often considered as the shade of the community owing to their wisdom, real life experience and maturity to guide and channel. At the same time the young form the backbone of the community and thus the prophet sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam said :

Whoever does not respect our elders and is not compassionate (merciful) to our youth, and does not give our scholars (learned men) due honour , (he ) is not of us.”

[Ref: Ahmad, Hakim and Tabranee]

This is also how our scholars taught us. For example from the early scholars this incident comes to mind :

Imam Ali Ibn Mubarak  says, “One day, Qadhi Abu Ya’la said to me, while walking with him, “If you had walked with someone you honour, where would you walk?” I replied, “I do not know.” He said, “Walk to his right. Place him at the position of the imam in salah (i.e he being on your left), leave his left side clear, in case he needs to spit or get rid of dirt.”

[Ref: Dhail-Tabaqatul Hanabilah]

To emphasize the importance of these manners, Imam An-Nawawi  (1233–1277 CE) in his book Riyadhus Salihin, cited a large collection of Ahadith and devoted an entire chapter to this subject entitled, “The Chapter of Respecting Scholars, the Elderly, the Dignitaries, Giving Them Precedence and the Best Seat and Acknowledging their Rank.”

PEARLS OF WISDOM 29 – HASTE IS FROM SATAN

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Clemency is from Allah and haste is from Satan.”

[Ref: Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2012]

How many road accidents take place due to haste?

PEARLS OF WISDOM 30 – VISIT THE SICK AND CARE FOR THEM

How lovely is it when your friends and families come visit you , even when you are admitted in the hospital or generally unwell? Islam urges this voluntary act with the highest of rewards so as to bring people closer to each other and strengthen their bond. In today’s time we see a million hits on a video on youtube of how such and such ill individual happened to have so many visitors and thus cheering him up. This basic etiquette and manner of society was implemented and highly encouraged long back by our prophet peace and blessings be upon him as he said :

"Whoever visits a sick person or visits a brother in Islam, a caller (among the angels) cries out to him: ‘May you be happy, may your walking be blessed, and may you occupy a dignified position in Paradise’  "

[Ref: Sunan at-tirmidhi, Saheeh]

Whoever visits a sick person is plunging into mercy (of allah) until he sits down, and when he sits down he is submerged in it.”
