people good or bad always desire something or the other. the genre of people you mentioned in the questioned have deliberately chosen other ways of life over al-Islam. this is not a coincidence that a 60 year old grandmother despite reading 5 books on islam , fully aware of its just injuctions rejects it and continues to follow what she does
it is not a coincidence that your colleague everyday hearing about islam, reading about its true identity from different sources easily and publicly available yet chooses not to follow it.
the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rightly said " Actions are by intentions and one shall get AS HE INTENDED "
