It is obligatory upon the husband to provide good food and shelter to his wife.

The messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Fear Allah regarding women! Indeed, they are committed with you and you have taken them on the security of Allah, and intercourse with them has been made lawful unto you by words of Allah. Their rights upon you are that you should provide them with food and clothing in a fitting manner.”

[Ref: Muslim and Abu Dawood]

Some important Lessons :

1) a Muslim is commanded to fear the Lord of the universe especially when it is something very important. Here the messenger of Allah is emphasizing the importance and status of treating women nicely to such a level that he begins his admonishment with " Fear Allah (whom you have to go back to one day answering all what you did)"

2) In today's time , a woman is many times forced into working. Not only does she have to take care of her household, children's upbringing and much more more than the husband but sometimes she is also asked to go out and work. In Islam, the women are relieved of this hard duty. The men were responsible for going out and doing the hard work while the women were allowed to rest at home , far from dust the heat and probable harassment.

3) A very important lesson here is that islam preaches that sexual intercourse is lawful to you only after you marry a woman. This is contrary to the western culture where every woman is indulged in sex with multiple men and vice versa. In Islam, the woman is not treated like a common wealthfare trust. She is priceless and thus her beauty and her intimacy are both not achieved except after committing to being responsible and taking care of her the way Islam mandates a husband to.
